I split this from the other topic because my additions were getting pretty off topic.. ------------------ PNG = Lossless Gif = Lossy Jpg = Lossy My question is this: If you zlib compress a bitmap, is it smaller than a jpg or png? If not, how much difference in size (average) is there? [edit] Found my answer... PNG is smaller than zlib compressed bitmaps. [edit again] I can be an idiot some times.. (No comments necessary..) I ran the test with zlib compression (using my bitmap utils..) and the image was compressed smaller than a PNG... Then, I did a bunch of images, and forgot to select zlib, so I thought the files were much larger than the pngs... I wondered what I was seeing before. I also added in the max compression routine for the bitmaputils.. (Considering releasing a new version...) and the 'normal' compression is smaller than png.. The 'max' compression is yet even smaller.. So.. I have changed my mind about adding png support to my bitmaputils.. I'll just leave it as is, but maybe release a new version with compression level support. [Last Edit] Here is a comparison of BMP files vs PNG files vs ZLIB Normal Compression vs ZLIB Max Compression |

Thanks Verrigan. I'll be sure to use your encryption software in the future. |
